COMPANY HISTORY
In 1972, a group of African American students formed a vocal ensemble entitled the Pamoja Singers. One of its founding members, Dr. Anthony T. Rucker, led them. These students presented concerts throughout the state and were very successful in their endeavors. One of their successful endeavors was the creation of The Pamoja Dance Company in 1974. Each semester, both the Pamoja Singers and the Pamoja Dance Company would put on joint performances for the University of Georgia community. In 1986, the School of Music adopted the Pamoja Singers in order to form a new course offering the elective credit for all UGA students. Not long afterwards, the Pamoja Singers changed their name to African American Choral Ensemble, also known as A.A.C.E. The Pamoja Dance Company remained under the office of Minority Services and Programs and now under the supervision of the African American Cultural Center. The group was founded for the purpose of providing University of Georgia students with an opportunity to become a part of a performing dance company without majoring in dance. The company has two performances each year, and also reaches out to the community by performing at various venues. After thirty years, Pamoja continues to strive at being one of the most entertaining dance company’s at the University of Georgia.
